This beautiful historic home located in the residential historic district of Monte Vista and was built in 1913. The main house is 3 stories with 4600 sf plus a basement and detached carriage house that would have been used originally to house a horse drawn carriage and tack. The carriage house now serves as a garage with a small apartment above. If walls could talk, this old girl would have some stories to tell. The home had been through several renovations, having been converted into apartments at one point and then back into a single family home. The last of the renovations had created a small kitchen in the interior of the home with no windows or natural light and insufficient storage. The homeowners originally contacted us to renovate the carriage house. After proposing the plan for the carriage house kitchen, they asked us to design the kitchen for the main house as well.
Our challenge in designing the space was to get natural light into the space, create storage and maintain the historic character of the home. We relocated the laundry to the basement allowing us to remove a wall that had divided the two rooms, doubling the size of the space. We now had an exterior wall with windows to flood natural light into the kitchen and ample space to create storage solutions. A coffered ceiling with luxurious crown moldings were added to accentuate the tall ceilings and add historic elements back into the kitchen. The homeowner is a collector of depression glass and fine china and cut crystal. We designed the cabinetry with leaded glass doors and interior lighting to showcase her collection. An appliance cabinet was designed to house small appliances where they stay plugged in and used in place without having to take them out for use. The custom vent hood and Bertazzoni range are the main focal point of the space and are beautifully complimented by the historically accurate encaustic cement tile on the floor. Double hung windows were replaced with casement windows which open out in order to have an unobstructed view. The window behind the kitchen sink is now a favorite lounging spot for the family cat.
