Monte Vista Historic Renovation

This gorgeous 4700-square-foot, 4-story Greek Revival home built at the turn of the last century is located in the heart of the Monte Vista Historic District of San Antonio and is listed on the National Register of Historic Homes. When the current homeowners purchased the home 20 years ago, it barely resembled its original glorious self as it had been converted into a multi-family dwelling.

During their first renovation, the homeowners located the kitchen in the interior of the home. They would later regret this decision for the lack of storage space and natural light. We proposed removing a wall that separated that kitchen from a laundry room that was on an exterior wall. This doubled the footprint of the kitchen and allowed for natural light to flood in. The laundry room was relocated to the basement.

Taking cues from existing original elements of the home, we created a coffered ceiling and added a large profile crown molding to accentuate the height of the ceilings. Existing double-hung windows were replaced with casement windows to allow for an uninterrupted view. A custom encaustic tile was made in an ancanthus leaf pattern for the floors acknowledging the homes Greek Revival beginnings. White marble and white cabinets help to create a bright, cheerful space. Beveled, leaded glass was added to cabinet doors with interior lighting to showcase the homeowners impressive collection of antique china and crystal. This new, eat-in kitchen is the families favorite spot to gather and truly is the heart of the home.
